Starting up your blog with a sub domain name:
Common mistakes with some beginner blogger are; they don't want to spend money when starting up their new blog. Starting up a professional blog requires you to spend some money in purchasing hosting, domain and premium theme.
As a new blogger avoid using blogspot.com extension on your domain name. Purchasing a custom domain name for your blogger or Wordpress blog will make your site stand out.
But the best is self hosted Wordpress site. You can use Hostgator or Bluehost to purchase your hosting and domain. There are other good hosting companies out there you can use, just make enquires and choose the one best for your brand.
Copying:
Avoid copying content from the web to your blog. Don't think that nobody will find out, am telling you that by the time you understand what you are doing, you may want to run away from blogging.
For instance, if you are a copycat, you only update your new blog site with blog posts from other people's website. When you want to apply for Google Adsense, then you will know that Google don't play with their policy
When your application starts facing multiple rejections you will come to understand that having over 100 blog posts from other people website amount to nothing in your own website. My advice to you is to flee away from such act.
Free theme/ premium theme:
Free themes have it own limitation. If you are using Self Hosted Wordpress site endeavor to purchase a premium theme. Premium theme adds more functionality to your site and makes it look superb. Premium theme is just the best. Avoid using free theme as a new blogger, unless you don't have enough budgets for it.
Don't write too short:
Some new bloggers write very short. Some write less than 300 words in their blog post and add over 5 pictures to make it longer. Write from 500 words above. The essence of writing above 500 words is for you to detail the blog post for better understanding.
Google believe that short posts will not give your readers the enough information about what you are trying to write about.
Write with the sole aim to impact your readers and not the other way round.
