It is commonly implemented to control video surveillance systems and link security control panels to devices such as access control card readers. In three-phase systems without distributed neutral in which the loads are balanced and symmetrical, an insertion can be made, i.e. two current transformers instead of three can be used; the instrument will calculate by difference the third phase which is not measured directly, considering it as identical to the other two. Devices will be linked together via a bus configuration as shown in the picture above. RS-485 is also used in building automation as the simple bus wiring and long cable length is ideal for joining remote devices. It is like the Universal Serial Bus (USB) or ethernet that we can find in many of our modern computers. In short, RS485 is a standard defining the electrical characteristics of serial lines for use in serial communications systems. The termination also includes pull up and pull down resistors to establish bias for each data wire for the case when the lines are not being driven by any device. In this setup both the TX and RX share a single pair of wires, therefore it is limited to half-duplex data transmission as the data cannot be transmitted simultaneously to and fro each device.
This means data can be transmitted in both directions to and fro devices one direction at a time. RS485 main advantages as compared to other serial communication are tolerance to electrical noise, lengthy cable runs, multiple slaves in one connection, and fast data transmission speed. Which one to choose? RS-485 is used as the physical layer underlying many standard and proprietary automation protocols used to implement industrial control systems, including the most common versions of Modbus and Profibus. This is typically handled by the protocol being used on top of RS-485, such as Modbus or Profibus. Modbus is the world’s most popular automation protocol in the market. RS485 is used as the physical layer for many standards and proprietary automation protocols to implement control systems, most commonly Modbus. That’s why common communication protocols like BACnet MS/TP and Modbus typically recommend baud rates between 9.6 - 115.2 kbps. Ultimately, it can be thought of in a way that serial communication is more made for this usage as compared to the common USB and ethernet. The RS485 is also common in computers, PLCs, microcontrollers and intelligent sensors in scientific and technical applications. Texas Instruments (Technical report).
Connecting analog instruments is very simple; you just need to connect the phase and neutral cables to the instrument. The main problems that arise during the testing phase can be due to incorrect installation of instruments and accessories. After having defined the type of instrument best suited to the needs, if the measurement is performed by indirect insertion, the accessories of the measuring system, such as current and voltage transformers must be chosen with care. For effective interference mitigation, the shield should provide a current path that doesn’t impact the communication wires. If the 8-core cable shipped with the device is used for RS485 communication, please trim the length and try to use a short wire to reduce noise interference. Disruptions or interference in the differential signal can corrupt data without repetition or reception; a "fire-and-forget" system. With RS-485 communication, 1s and 0s propagate as a differential voltage. Its use of differential signaling makes it resistant to noise, and its support for up to 32 devices on a single network makes it suitable for a wide range of applications. The foreword to the standard references The Telecommunications Systems Bulletin TSB-89 which contains application guidelines, including data signaling rate vs. This is great for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems where there are many devices and it also comes at a very low cost to implement.
B- lines, with high and low voltages representing binary 1 and 0 (on and off), ensuring reliable data communication. You can easily enjoy the advantages such as low power consumption and long transmission range, without affording the cost of changing the sensors you are using. As mentioned, RS485 is used to link devices instead of other means as it provides significant advantages. In multifunction instruments, not only the cables connected to the measurement, but also the RS485 serial port and the analog and digital inputs and outputs must be wired. RS-485 signals transmit on a serial bus, meaning all senders (masters or managers) will be detected by all receivers. If you’re very sure that you are only using RS485 then you will not be disappointed with the former. RS485 is used more industrially where many devices need to be interconnected together for a system. So you'll need to really have a high-end PC at each terminal to actually store prices. However, Arduino and Raspberry Pi hobbyists also use it for some of their projects when multiple peripherals need to be linked to the board.
