Just like it’s older brother RS232, RS485 is a form of serial communication. Much like RS232, RS485 doesn’t have an actual standard connector. If you are familiar with RS232, then you may already know a little bit about it. If the vendor did a poor job, the default is to have the resistor active and they must be disabled unless they are the terminating devices on the network. The value of each termination resistor should be equal to the cable impedance (typically, 120 ohms for twisted pairs). The load presented by other devices on the network affects this floating so the resistor values may need to be changed depending on the number of devices installed and the values of the pull up/down resistors they are using.
Because they are produced in such large quantities, Cat 5 cables are relatively inexpensive, what is rs485 cable often less than half the price of specialty RS-485 cabling. This device and/or the pull up/down resistors of other devices are candidates for investigation. It must not be allowed to float at any voltage level so devices have pull up/down resistors to pull the line to an allowable floating voltage. What happens if one device waits too long after sending its last bit before releasing the line it's possible that the other devices will miss some bits of data. When it has finished sending it must release the line. When a device wants to send it must grab the line. Any required SPI output signals must be configured as outputs, either by calling InitSPI() or by setting the appropriate bits in the Port D data direction register DDRD. We start with including the standard library for driving the LCD and declare the D8 pin of the Arduino Nano as an output pin which we will later use to declare the MAX485 Module as a transmitter or Receiver.
It is not a standard Communication protocol, but it is a physical circuit with which you can transmit and receive serial data with other peripherals. Termination: Proper network termination is vital to avoid signal reflections, which can lead to communication errors. The /SS (active-low slave select) signal enables data transfers by slave devices when it is active low. Star and ring topologies are not recommended because of signal reflections or excessively low or high termination impedance. If you don't have obvious ends of the trunk (because you created a star) then we recommend re-cabling to form a linear trunk or we wish you luck. If a device floats out of the specified range then to other devices it will look like the floating devices isn't floating at all. Another advantage over RS232 that I mentioned earlier is the number of connectable devices. We have been using Microcontroller Development Boards like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, NodeMCU, ESP8266, MSP430, etc. for a long time now in our small projects where most of the times distance between the sensors and board is not more than few centimeters at max and at these distances, the communication between the different sensor modules, relays, actuators, and controllers can be easily done over simple jumper wires without us being worried about the signal distortion in the medium and the Electrical noises creeping into it.
