Noise in the range of ±200 mV is essentially blocked due to common-mode noise cancellation. Typical line voltage levels from the line drivers are a minimum of ±1.5 V to a maximum of about ±6 V. Receiver input sensitivity is ±200 mV. If more than one slave tried to drive the transmit line simultaneously, their serial drivers would fight with each other for control of the bus. For the transfer of data, the baud rates of both Master and Slave must be between 10% of each other. While the standard only supports low data rates and short line length (50ft.) it is still widely used and, very useful in many applications. Therefore, while not technically correct, it does make some sence to refer to a 4-wire RS485 network that would extend the number of nodes on a 4-wire network to 32 standard loads. In this example, the QVGA Controller selects the serial A/D by outputting a LOW signal on /SS. We have built sophisticated instruments using the QScreen Controller that operate very reliably using multiple interrupts in addition to the software UART. However, Arduino and Raspberry Pi hobbyists also use it for some of their projects when multiple peripherals need to be linked to the board. Without termination resistors, reflections of fast driver edges can cause multiple data edges that can cause data corruption. The RS485 standard only specifies electrical characteristics of the driver and the receiver, it does not specify or recommend any protocol. The standard specifies a differential form of signalling. The RS485 standard addresses the problem of data transmission, where a balanced (differential) transmission line is used in a multi-drop (party line) configuration (or point-to-point if only two devices are on the network). Receivers on a network (RS485 or RS422) have built in hysteresis (200mV differential required to insure known state). In this project, we have only used a baud rate of 9600 which is well under the maximum transfer speed we can achieve with the MAX-485 Module but this speed is suitable for most of the sensor modules out there and we don’t really need all the maximum speeds while working with Arduino and other development boards unless you are using the cable as an ethernet connection and require all the bandwidth and transfer speed you can get.
Here again, we start with including the standard library for driving the LCD and declare the D8 pin of the Arduino Nano as an output pin which we will later use to declare the MAX485 Module as a transmitter or Receiver. To insure that a receiver stays in an inactive state, when no data signal is present, bias is generally added to a network at one or more locations. Why is termination important in an RS485/RS422 network? The value of each termination resistor should be equal to the cable impedance (typically, 120 ohms for twisted pairs). Twisted pair wire with a characteristic impedance of 120 ohms is recommended with 120 ohm termination at each end of the communications line. EIA-485 (formerly RS-485 or RS485) is an OSI Model physical layer electrical specification of a two-wire, half-duplex, multipoint serial connection. The connection diagram for the above circuit is also given below. The receiver input has a fail-safe feature that guarantees logic high output if the input is open circuit. Another potential problem with large networks without isolation, is that severe damage can occur to your entire system, if a high voltage source is connected (accidentally or otherwise) to your communications lines. Since it uses a differential line over twisted pair (like EIA-422), it can span relatively large distances (up to 4000 feet or just over 1200 metres).
