The true toll of victims mown down and killed by buses in London can today be laid bare, amid fears transport tragedies blighting the capital's roads have reached crisis point.

Since January 2024, at least 15 people have died in collisions with double-deckers - the latest in Harrow just two weeks ago.

However, it's believed that since 2014 almost 90 people have lost their lives after being hit by one of the capital's buses.

The youngest victim in the past year was a nine-year-old schoolgirl who was killed after being struck by a bus in Bexleyheath, south-east London.

Ada Bicakci died in hospital on August 5, two days after she and her five-year-old brother were hit while cycling with their father.

The vehicle reportedly mounted the pavement, leaving British-Turkish national Ada mortally injured. Her sibling survived the collision.

Bus driver Martin Asolo-Agogua, 23, of Nunhead, has since been charged with causing death by careless driving when under influence of drink or drugs and driving while over the drug limit. He is due to attend Bromley Magistrates' Court on March 24.

It comes as figures compiled by MailOnline revealed January to be the deadliest month for fatal bus crashes in London in 2024, with three people killed across the city.

Among those to have died in that month was pedestrian Catherine Finnegan.

The 56-year-old, originally from County Galway and known as Kathleen, died on January 29 after being hit by a double-decker bus at Victoria station.

The tragedy came three years after a bus driver caused the death of Melissa Burr at the same station, when he accidentally pressed the accelerator rather than the brake pedal.

Olusofa Popoola, 61, killed 32-year-old commuter Ms Burr outside the station.

Popoola had accidentally accelerated into the back of a stationary bus, shunting it forward into Ms Burr, from Rainham, Kent, who died from multiple injuries.

Popoola continued to accelerate for six seconds after he collided with the bus in front, a court heard. He said he had mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.

Married father-of-four Popoola, from Peckham in south-east London, admitted causing Ms Burr's death by careless driving.

After a retrial, he was cleared of the more serious charge of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury to the other driver.

During the hearing in January 2024, Judge Trowler said Popoola's driving fell 'just short of dangerous driving'.

Judge Trowler sentenced Popoola to 140 hours of unpaid work and a banned him from driving for three years.

Reading statements in court, Ms Burr's mother Trish and brother Graham Burr told how they struggled to understand how Popoola, a bus driver with 20 years' experience, could have made such a mistake.

Mrs Burr sobbed as she read hers, saying: 'My daughter was not stupid. She was the completely innocent victim of one man's incompetent driving.'

She told Popoola he was more fortunate than her because she had been handed a 'life sentence' without her kind and talented daughter.

Following Ms Finnegan's death, passengers warned about the unsafe layout of Victoria Bus Station, with frequent users of the facility slamming its 'unsafe' design and layout.

A 60-year-old commuter told MailOnline: 'I don't like the layout of Victoria. It is extremely confusing. It is really unsafe because there is just too much crossing traffic. It is the same at Kings Cross to a lesser degree.'

Melissa Burr, 32, from Rainham in Kent, was killed outside Victoria Railway Station in August 2021

Emergency services were called after the tragedy shortly before 8.30am on August 10 2021

In May, 2024, the families of Ms Burr and หนังโป๊ Ms Finnegan hit out after it was revealed a third person was struck by a double-decker at London Victoria Station.

The woman was left in a life-threatening condition, with Ms Finnegan's niece Katrina Finnegan later issuing a statement to MailOnline on behalf of her family together with Ms Burr's mother.

They said: 'The families of Kathleen Finnegan and Melissa Burr are devastated to hear of another serious incident near Victoria Station.

'Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim of this terrible bus crash. We are calling on the Mayor of London and Transport for London to close this area until it is made safe for pedestrians.'

The oldest person to die in 2024 was an 85-year woman, who was struck outside the Tesco store in Morning Lane, Hackney at 5.10pm on January 4, 2024.

Despite being rushed to hospital, the pensioner died four days later.

The next day, a male was struck and killed by a bus at a pedestrian crossing in Southwark. He has not been named, but is understood to have died from his injuries in hospital a day later.
